Story read in a performance magazine like HotRod, out of the 13 sets 3 went to the person who special ordered, and the other 10 were spread to the salt flat racing community. I managed to buy 1
Legend is that John Lingenfelter is the man who contacted Richmond Gear in the early 90s, to custom make the special 2.13 Ring and Pinion for 12 bolt car.

These are rare gears that can push to 200+ mph on highway type landspeed top speeds.
Ring and pinion gear ratio, meaning lets say if you have a 3.00 to 1 gear. Means the Pinion will spin 3. times to 1 wheel rotation.
The size of rear Tires also effect the ratio too, but not going there to make it simple for those learning how it goes.
Other GM General Motors Ring and Pinion sets that can reach 200mph
GM 2.41  10Bolt 8.5 inch ring
GM 2.56  12Bolt 8.875 ring gear
   GM 2.29  12Bolt 8.875 ring gear
     GM 2.29  10Bolt 7.5 inch ring gear
2.73  41-15 tooth
2.56  41-16 tooth
2.41  41-17 tooth
2.29  39-17 tooth
2.28  41-18 tooth
2.29  48-21 tooth
2.14  47-22 tooth

main factor is the gear ratio not which mfg GM, Ford, Mopar, etc

If you want good gas milage and top highway type speeds with the right engine power and overdrive can reach top speeds of 150mph up
Ring and Pinion ratios of
2.73 - 3.08

Drivetrain rear wheel drive

From the Engine flywheel, to the Transmission, to the Driveshaft, to the Differential Rear Gears that drive wheel axles.

Ring and Pinion in Posi Carrier 12Bolt

Posi Carrier unit, has spring set. How to tell if you have a Positraction unit? Jack the rear off the ground(Chuck block the front wheels first safety) then turn a wheel. If both wheels turn same direction, its in there.
Dont take a chance breaking something doing a burnout to see if you got 1 or 2 tire marks

  1. There was also a 2.29 ratio that Chevy put in a 12 bolt 396 2 barrel.

    the Difference between the 2.28
8 7/8 that came in Caddys and the 2.29 that came in a 12 bolt are the spline pitch 45 vs 60 for the 12 bolt

  2. There is also a 12 bolt 2.29 ratio that is very rare looked for years never found one. It 12 bolts have 60 deg. splines while the Caddy 10-12 8 7/8 have 45 deg splines

Also there is a 2.26 Ford 8.5 gears that can be made to work in 8.8 housings fairly easily.

  3. The Caddy 2.28 gears are fairly common

I was the first NA Lakester over 300 in 2008 at B'ville. I was powered by a BBC using a GM 7.5 2.14 gearset with a Torsen unit out of a Firebird

  4. Awesome hearing about the achievements. I know the salt flats are dangerous and getting on it is a risk but I feel as all do - it is worth it.
